Cervus eldi siamensis
DESCRIPTION This race is distinguished from the others by its antlers, which have relatively short brow tines and usually are palmated at the beam tips. The coat is reddish at all seasons and is spotted along the middle line of the back, and also sometimes on the sides. The pasterns are normal and hairy.
DISTRIBUTION Found in Thailand, Laos and Cambodia; sparingly in Vietnam; and on the southwestern half of the island of Hainan, China. Formerly abundant on the open plains and deciduous forests of the region, but now severely depleted as the result of war and uncontrolled hunting.
STATUS Listed as endangered by the USF&WS (1970) and on Appendix I of CITES (1975).
