Red Deer x Wapiti (hybrid) - Species Detail

AKA: Gold: 237 2/8" Gold (Bow): 0"
Endangered: Silver: 0" Silver (Bow): 0"
Bronze: 0" Bronze (Bow): 0"
Cervus elaphus ssp.

These animals are found on some hunting preserves that were established many years ago in the former Soviet Union to provide sport for high officials and foreign VIPs. We have received entries from one such preserve in north-central Kazakhstan, near the village of Borovoye in the vicinity of Kökshetau. This property is extensive and unfenced. Evidently, both red deer and wapiti were introduced there and have interbred. We are told that the red deer were obtained from preserves in the vicinity of Moscow (where they are not native) and that the wapiti came from antler farms in the Siberian Altai, but we do not know if this is correct.

The stags that have been taken at Borovoye are fine trophies. They are free-ranging natural hybrids that are protected by the Kazakhstan game department and hunted under license. Believing that their measurements should be recorded and preserved, we have established a category for them in the Record Book.
