Ovis gmelini anatolicaSometimes called central Anatolian mouflon.DESCRIPTION (male) Shoulder height about 30 inches (76 cm), weight about 110 pounds (50 kg). Females are considerably smaller.Overall color is reddish-brown, with the chest and front of upper forelegs a darker brown. There is a narrow brown flank band and a grayish saddle patch. Underparts, rump patch, lower legs, muzzle, area around the eyes, and inside of ears are white. No bib. As in the Cyprian and Armenian mouflons, the horns are supracervical, curving above and behind the neck. Females are hornless.HABITAT Open rolling hills.DISTRIBUTION & STATUS Until the 1950s, the Konya mouflon was found across west-central Anatolia (Asian Turkey), from Nallihan southeast through Sivrihisar, Konya and Karaman to the central Toros mountains. Now only in the Bozdag mountains west of Konya. Population was estimated at 2,000 animals in 1987. Main threats are poaching and competition from domestic sheep.REMARKS Special hunting permits are occasionally available from the Turkish government, and on at least one occasion a darting (tranquilizing) permit was available when biologists needed to obtain blood and tissue samples.
