Gansu Deer

Cervus elaphus kansuensis

Ciervo de Gansu (Sp), Gansuhirsch (G), Cerf de Gansu (F). Called Gansu red deer in China. "Gansu" was formerly spelled Kansu.

DESCRIPTION According to Wallace, the Gansu deer resembles the red deer in shape and build, but is much larger and more uniformly colored, with "the roar of a Scottish stag and the horns of a wapiti." He gives the shoulder height for males as about 57 inches (145 cm) and the weight as about 530 pounds (240 kg). Color is speckled grayish-brown with darker legs. The rump patch is yellowish-white, and is said to be larger than in the McNeill deer, with a narrower median stripe. Typically, the antlers have 5-6 points to the side. The longest antlers of record measured 45-3/4 inches (116.2 cm) (Rowland Ward, 1933).

DISTRIBUTION China, where it is found in northern Qinghai, Gansu, and northern Sichuan.

TAXONOMIC NOTES Some authorities (including the IUCN) regard the Gansu deer as a form of McNeill deer (C. e. macneilli), but we continue to separate them.
