DESCRIPTION Head and body length 31-51 inches (79-130 cm). Tail length 4-8 inches (10-20 cm). Shoulder height 24-30 inches (61-76 cm). Weight 40-55 pounds (18-25 kg).
A medium-sized cat with tufted ears, pronounced cheek ruffs, long legs, very large feet, and a very short tail with a black tip. Its coat is usually yellowish-brown-often with a pattern of dark spots-with the upperparts a frosted gray and the underparts buff. The winter coat is long, soft and thick. Paws are thickly furred for walking in snow. Females are similar to males but smaller.
HABITAT Wooded areas, preferably high forests with dense undergrowth, often in steep, mountainous terrain.
DISTRIBUTION The taiga forest of northern Asia, from the Ural Mountains to eastern Siberia. Also in mountain forests of the Middle East and other parts of Asia.
Also found in Europe: mainly in Russia, Scandinavia, and in the Carpathian Mountains.
TAXONOMIC NOTES Many subspecies have been described by various biologists, including lynx (most of Europe and eastward to the Yenesei River in Siberia), wrangeli (east of the Yenesei River in Siberia), orientalis (Caucasus), and isabellina (Kashmir and northward through Tibet and the mountains of Central Asia and Mongolia). We do not separate them.
